About This 2048 Game

How to Play

The rules are simple to learn but genuinely tricky to master:

• Move the tiles — press the arrow keys (← ↑ → ↓) or the WASD keys. On a phone or tablet, swipe up, down, left, or right directly on the board.
• Every tile slides — a move pushes all tiles as far as they can go in that direction. If a move would not change the board, it is ignored.
• Matching tiles merge — two tiles with the same number that bump together become one tile worth double (two 4s become an 8, two 8s become a 16, and so on).
• New tiles spawn — after each successful move, a fresh tile pops into a random empty cell. It is almost always a 2, with a 1-in-10 chance of being a 4.
• Scoring — every merge adds the value of the new tile to your score, so creating bigger tiles is worth far more points than many small ones.
• Winning and losing — reaching a 2048 tile triggers the win screen; you can press Keep Going to chase even larger tiles. The game ends only when the grid is full and no merges remain.

Tips and Strategy

2048 rewards planning more than luck. A few habits make a huge difference once you internalize them:

• Pick a corner — anchor your biggest tile in one corner (most players favor the bottom-left or bottom-right) and build around it so it never gets pushed away.
• Limit your directions — try to use mostly two perpendicular moves, such as down and left, and avoid the opposite direction (up, in that example) that would scatter your high tile out of its corner.
• Build a snake — keep your tiles ordered from largest to smallest along a row, then zig-zag into the next row, so merges chain together cleanly.
• Don't rush — there is no timer, so think before each move. Swiping fast in random directions fills the board with stranded odd tiles.
• Keep an exit — always leave at least one empty cell when you can. A full board with no matching neighbors is game over.
